Content Strategy for the Lazy Business Owner

you're already juggling a million tasks... and you still have to figure out how to market your business online. 🥴 we get it; formulating a digital marketing strategy can be time-consuming and it's often on the bottom of your to-do list.

nonetheless, as a small business owner, you should always have a content strategy in place to ensure that you're on track to achieve your goals. if you're a lazy entrepreneur who wants to boost your business online without getting burned out, don’t worry- we've got you covered.

what is a social media content strategy?🤨

if you want to get serious about marketing your business online, you'll need to be strategic. content strategy involves strategically planning, creating, publishing, promoting, and managing content that your audience finds valuable. content strategy is an essential part of any business’s marketing efforts. it helps you find your people and gives your business a competitive edge.

never created content strategy before ? here are a few tips to help you get started!

conducting a social media audit

to begin a social media audit, review your social media accounts and consider these questions. what has worked before? what hasn’t worked? what resources do we have available to us to measure success? the data gathered through a social media audit will help measure how well your content is performing across platforms and accounts. the process helps you identify what's working well and what needs improvement!

a social media audit shows you:

  • what your audience resonates with and wants to see on each social media platform.

  • what’s helping grow your audience (and what’s not)

  • where to focus your attention next

every social platform has the option to check and review your metrics. when you know exactly how your brand's content is currently performing, you can save time, sweat, and tears with a content strategy that incorporates what works and eliminates what doesn't.

setting clear goals

before you start creating content, it’s important to set clear goals. what do you want to achieve with your content? do you want to increase brand awareness? drive sales? improve SEO? without clear objectives, you may risk creating content that doesn't align with your business goals or resonate with your target audience. by setting clear objectives, you ensure your content strategy aligns with your overall business goals, maximizes results, and provides direction for your content creation and distribution efforts.

whatever your goals are, we suggest using the SMART approach as a guide to ensure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-sensitive!

choosing content pillars

a content pillar is a theme, topic, or type of content that guides what you'll post about. your content pillars are a big part of your content strategy, so be sure to choose them thoughtfully! having a clear set of content pillars shapes the content you create and makes it easier to decipher which content types your audience prefers.

for example, here are some content pillars based on topics:

  • what do you do/sell? what can you talk endlessly about without getting tired?

  • what can you educate on? myth-busting content does great!

  • who are you talking to? what community is your target audience in?

  • what about your personal experience can help create a connection with your target audience? sprinkle your personality here!

...and here are some content pillars based on content types:

  • educational- content is usually highly valuable, therefore SAVABLE.

  • storytelling- content is usually highly emotional content about your personal belief and values or your own journey with your topic.

  • relatable- content is usually that content more prone to going viral. Ex. trends, pop culture etc.

  • sales- closed mouths don’t get fed, so you gotta tell people what you do and what makes you stand out!

if you’re wondering how many content pillars you need, we usually suggest 3-6!

planning to succeed

next, you just have to figure out how often you want to post. posting frequently increases your chances of showing up on feeds, being featured on another account, or appearing in the top search results for keywords you commonly use. posting regularly is also a great way to test out what resonates with your audience.

in order to finalize your content strategy, you'll need to review your goals and select the social media platforms that align best with them. if you're not sure which platform makes the most sense for your business, read our blog post which social media platform is right for my business? to help you get a clearer idea.

keep in mind that it's always best to prioritize quality over quantity with every platform. that means ensuring the content you post is relevant to your audience, relevant to your business or industry, and valuable to your followers.
